MOHAN AND GOPAL BUILDING
IN 1971 we as a family used to live in Gopal Building an housing complex with some eight or so small but elegant houses owned by a man by name Gopal. We stayed here for nine months in all and we moved into this house because it would be closer to School. In the rain my mother with her two sons; me and my younger brother would many times return from the ITI hospital after some treatment. It was a cosy house facing eastwards and the early morning Sun blazing straight into our eyes as Children. In 1971 there was a war with our neighbour and a special siren would ooze out of the ITI factory and the Police would ask us to shut the lights because ITI complex could be a target of the enemy. This was a frightening thing for me as a child. This house brought us good luck as thereafter we moved into our own place of residence.
Living close to this house was a lad by name MOHAN..who was my senior at the Lowry Memorial High School and an Brahmin by descent and my mother had some special affection for him. There was something bizarre about this lad..he had lost his lower left foot when he was just four years of age and was sentenced to an artificial foot ever after in spite of which he was still bubbly and gleaming always. How did he loose his Limb.In an accident in front of the Lowry Memorial School upon crossing the whitefeild road to enter the school. In his own words he described to me at times how he was dragged by the truck a reasonable stretch on the road.
Much later we lost track of Mohan....but he later became very successful I was told at some form of business. The greatness of this lad is that for a reasonable period of time he used to come searching for my mother and our family once every year and discuss old times with great feeling and nostalgia.
Mohan if you are reading this from anywhere around the World just get in touch in some form.It would be splendid.

BUS SERVICE FROM BANGALORE TO NEW DELHI AND KOLKATA
Some people call me ludicrous for suggesting such a proposition..A bus service from Bangalore to New Delhi and another to Kolkata. There are buses in the World that ply over distances like six thousand five hundred kilometres and the distances involved in the above proposition should be much lesser.
If necessary a National Transport Corporation must be created to oversee such public transport that criss-cross large distances.
The advantages of such a service would be many.It would ease demand on Train and Air services especially for the leisurely traveller, It will be a profitable venture considering the demand on these routes, It will boost Tourism in general and tourist inflow to Splendours and in every sense increase the dynamism and people mobility for various reasons.

DISTRIBUTOR IN A MARUTI ZEN CAR ENGINE
ELECTRICAL PARAMETERS OF THE SPARK CIRCUIT
1. 12 volt battery---the battery seen inside the car
2 Switch
3.Condensor
4.primary coil of solenoid also called induction coil
5.Spark plug
Distributor in a car engine distributes spark from the induction coil to the four spark plugs of the four cylinders in the engine.
This is a wonderful DC circuit that works like an AC through constant contact and disconnection of the switch shown as 2 in the diagram which is operated by a cam.
When switch 2 is closed the primary of the induction coil gets charged creating high potential energy stored in the magnetic field of the coil which has primary and secondary turns. When the switch is opened the magnetic field collapses suddenly and creates a large voltage of 24000 volts or 24 KV discharged at the spark plug creating an instantaneous spark. The condenser 3 prevents any accidental sparking across switch 2.

RODENT RAT MENACE AND CARS
All or most car owners could have experienced the problem with rats.Simply said rat or bandicoot entering the car and disconnecting the electrical system or creating short circuit between electrical networks or biting the fuel tubes and creating fuel leakage. These issues can sometimes be life threatening to passengers..
The population of rats enhance very fast a single female contributing up to 140 progeny per year a staggering number and a group of rats pronounce greater risk for vehicles as against a single predator. As a group they become more playful and do more damage.Rats are generally active in the night after say 1:00 PM and go about their business of scavenging for few hours.
Many people have spent a fortune repairing cars damaged by rats and have zero sympathy for them exterminating them using rat cakes which is a poison.Rat cakes take around four days to terminate the rat a slow and painful death the poison crippling the central nervous system of the rat and arresting movement.
Why do rats enter cars? The aroma of fuel attracts them..and larger the amount of fuel ...larger the smell..and larger the threat of rats entering the system. If one rat picks the scent in a group all of them enter the car and bite everything possible to drink fuel....The smell of fuel is similar to stench of discarded food and fuel may not be palatable to them but it end results in costly damage to the vehicle. Rodents enter vehicles cars and two wheelers which have not been used for some time.If it has been used the engine environment will be hot keeping away these creatures..and the risk is higher when it rains as rats assemble under the car for shelter and move into the vehicle which is cold due to rains.
I have endured various kinds of problems with rats entering my car..spent sleepless nights trying to put the vehicle back on track and endured many a jolt noting petrol leaks and jammed electrical system and spent so much.
How to handle this rat menace? This problem may not occur in Gated apartments where these rats might have been thrown out during construction and there are large compound walls and security.Rats are attracted by food and they enter cars searching for food mistaking fuel smell to be food..
Some of the tips may be as follows;
1.Never park cars near filth and decayed food matter in the vicinity overnight.Early morning the car may not start.
2.Never park cars near opening of Drains ...rats emerge from these drains and there will be many rats in this drains..and because of crowd effect they might emerge from the drain straight into the car.
3.Keep your car warm.If your car is parked outside make sure some family member runs the engine for atleast two minutes and cover the vehicle with the cover. The cover will trap the heat and prevent rats from entering. This must be done in rainy season and cold seasons as car tend to become cool.
4.Put naphthalene balls under the car where you park it. Naphthalene repels rats. Even tobacco emptied from cigarettes can repel rats.
5.Pepper has the innate quality to repel rats.
6.The law must enforce manufacturing standards on vehicle manufactures to mandatorily put metal shield on all conduits that risk rat biting
6.The law must enforce manufacturing standards on vehicle manufactures to mandatorily put metal shield on all conduits that risk rat biting
Wishing those who read this a ratless car experience. Beware they can attack anytime and especially at the most vulnerable juncture.

SIDDIGANAPATHY BHAT AT REC NIT CALICUT
At REC NIT Calicut in 1982 there was a student in the seventh semester by name Siddi Ganapathy Bhat. The day my admission process was underway it took some time into the night and my father and myself were distraught and tired as getting back to Calicut city at that hour would be an onerous task. Siddi Ganapathy Bhat knowing our predicament suo-moto suggested that we could stay in his hostel room as his room mate was away.So we spent the night in his C hostel room on the first floor facing the D hostel.Much later I used to meet him in his room in the D hostel. Later I came to know he lectured Electrical Engineering for many years at some Engineering College in Karnataka State. His brother Narayan Bhat was later a student at REC NIT Calicut.
I must thank the concern he showed for us at that juncture which is noteworthy and may be without much precedence.

TRIBUTE TO A FATHER
Its more than an year my Father is dead and it would be misleading and inappropriate if I dont write a lasting tribute to a man whose basic dedication ,abilities and orientation postured the lives of his family into a progressive domain the benefits of which successive generations in this city would enjoy.
My Father came to this city from the rustic environs of a place called Narath in Cannanore to work at the Indian Telephone Industries in 1954 and put nearly 38 years of service there with staff number 5862 and what a rare coincidence his hospital registration number being 8562 ..note the similarity of numbers. He lived and died by these numbers in this city...8 is my lucky number and all through life I got Economic benefits from him.
My most earliest memory of my Father is being in his arms when my Mother and Father were moving into a rented house at a place called Kothur very early in the morning trekking an almost four kilometers from the house of my Aunt .It was wee hours and the Bangalore cold gave me a jolt and at that age of infancy could take cognisance of him and my mother walking behind with a green brief case.It was a trek and journey of sorts which would force us to stand on our legs as a family with minimal support around.
Later on my brother came and I remember his association from the Gopal Building a house where we stayed as children for around an year in 1971.When the war with our neighbouring country on A blackout would be declared and all the houses would switch off the lights in the house.I remember this incident with fear thinking we could be bombed. One of the turning points of our life was when my mother decided to buy a site first to which my Father was largely opposed. The same year We bought a site and even built a house moving into the house in 1972.My Father;s industry came handy as he strived to complete the building of the house. Life began to change for me and my brother after moving into this house because we could be independent and spend more time on our educational activities.
More often during these days our Father used to take us to Bangalore City for movies and also once inside the Vidhana Soudha and we used to stop at some hotel for Masala Dosa.He used to take me to Chinese dentists on M G Road to get my tooth extracted and annually during school re-opening my brother along with my father used to visit Avenue road to buy books for the next season. Then we used to go to Bata outlets for school shoes and to Binny showrooms for Uniforms.Enter the Dragon,Bobby, Benhur are all some of the movies I remember he had taken us to..he used to take us to football matches in Bangalore stadium and KSCA stadium and also to political rallies of Mr.Morarji Desai and Mr.Jyoti Basu.
If Iam not mistaken in the september of 1972 there was a theft in our house by a theif by name Krishna who entered our house when my mother had gone in the afternnon with lunch for me and my brother and all the gold ornaments of my mother were stolen. This was an harrowing time for us.Miraculously the theif was caught six months down the line in Shoolay police station limits and I remember visiting this police station as a kid as the police wanted some statement from our family.Let me place on record that the family of O K Nambiar helped us with influence in the higher echleons of the Police department. My father did higher order industry in collaborating with the Police and the courts all single handedly without any complaints or remorse and worked to the successful completion of the tasks. No one could have done this better.
My Father had a pair of skilled hands. He was good at working on mechanical things with dexterity and that skill came handy at the workplace. He had by and large a very realistic and pragmatic approach to things. He had accurate assessment of situations most of the time and took realistic approaches and the will to get things done through perseverance.
My brother Sunil and myself during our very formative years used to get into physical fights. Most of the time he used to be the winner. Our disposition to fight was a very concerning thing for my Father and he used to discuss it most of the time. When he used to go on the first shift early in the morning he used to almost wake both of us from sleep and warn us not to fight. After he began to do that we stopped fighting.
One of the earliest memories of my Father is waiting near the Lowry Memorial School gates for him as a very small boy. His shift would be over at 4:15 and he would come to the school gates by around 4:30.I used to feel tense until I saw him and I could see him crossing the rails and that used to give me great joy.
In 1973 my sister was born and our house was a huge blessing. As we brothers grew up we were fit enough to go to school and come back all by ourselves. The problem sometimes is that we would get sick and our father has many a times taken us to the ITI hospital accompanying us most times.
We were largely a cosy family..the industry of my Father...the administrative skills of my Mother and the co-operation among children saw us tide through with relative ease the challenges of living and add to that the benevolence of the Public sector ITI and a school at walking distance from our house.
Most of the time when he came from work he used to bring something for us to eat.I used to accompany my father many times to Kambi Shivappa stores in Avenue road to buy groceries..he had a penchant for quality and rarely compromised on it.

SARVANGASANA IN YOGA
There are various yogic Asanas and some practise them patiently every day and is some times a time consuming affair.
There is a very powerful Asana in Yoga which can be done very quickly and has enoromous health benefits. I request the world community young or old to spend five minutes almost every day to practise this Asana..It does not matter in which part of the world you might be or how rich or poor you are..this asana will improve mental and physical health.
Sarvangasan in sanskrit means the exercise of every organ of the body and this asan quickly contributes to this end. When you are at this Asan due to the posture blood flows very freely and quickly into brain cells bringing more oxygen to Brain tissues and when you arise from this asan from the elongated blood vessels of the brain the blood makes a gushy flow into other parts of the body creating a cleansing action.
I feel this Asana must be mandatorily taught at all schools in the world so that it becomes a part of life of entire humanity.

THE GYM IN THE B HOSTEL OF NIT REC CALICUT
Somewhere in the year 1983 I met Dr.Nirmala Menon the doctor of REC NIT Calicut with some complaint of Fever and she made a comment that would temporarily alter my priorities for good or bad at REC Calicut. She told me I was very weak and underweight and a poorly formed chest. She admonished me for not taking proper care of my health. Let me reiterate that I used to have severe bouts of Asthma as a young lad and did nothing about my health during my Pre-University I was more focussed about gaining entry into an Engineering College. She was not amused and advised me to exercise and have more stronger food. It was indeed a tough call but I decided to do something about it rightaway.
I was in a quandary for many weeks and did not know how to go about things. Some suggested Running...others suggested Gym...few suggested Yoga...some suggested Bull Worker.....At the end of the day I landed up doing all of them.
Out of spite I started visiting the Gym in the B hostel not knowing fully what it was largely doing push-ups and bench-pressing and not to mention leg weights and dumbells etc. Sunil Chillar, Vinayak Prabhakar More...Nityananda Kamath could be seen in the gym most times. I started doing bench-Press with 5kg on both sides rightaway which was not the right thing to do. I think after few months I left gym for bull worker getting one for myself and doing the German technique of Isotonic compression exercises with some results. Alongside I started doing Yoga almost all the Yogic exercises imaginable.ONE MUST NOT DO BULL WORKER AND YOGA SIMULTANEOUSLY THEY SAY...MAYBE YOGA IN THE MORNING AND BULLWORKER IN THE EVENING AND NEVER THE OTHER WAY ROUND. All these things were slowly giving me results of some kind. I happened to meet Dr. Nirmala Menon almost an year after my first rendezvous and she told me you look better now and just maintain this. Thus was my tryst with all these body building activities.
At my hey day I developed my stamina so much that I could run up to ten rounds around the REC football court .
Why did I write this ? One of the reasons is that I see many adolescents trying these tricks that i did and I have few words of input. Note that that during the period of adoloscence the body releases various kinds of harmonies stimulating physical activity...this is not unusual. Let me advise boys and girls who are on such endeavours how to go about such activities.
Always do warm up before gym...a mild run for some 100 meters or more. Do push-ups properly how much ever you can...use dumbbells..then do leg push ups and when you do bench pressing start with low weights to start with and increase it slowly up to some reasonable level..not to use very high weights at all as done by professional body builders. If done continuously it will take eight to nine months of almost daily work. You can take a two day break per week. The most important part of such activities is diet. Drink milk almost every day with half boiled eggs and chicken. This must supplement your existing diet. A forty five minute stint at the Gym is ideal.
Bull Worker also helps in body building and it changes Body structure sometimes for a long time to come..like increase in height...and longer arms and legs and some times irreversible body structure for good.Choose few of the exercises mentioned in the manual and do them every day. There is a circulation exercise to be done at the outset. Do breathing properly and inhale and exhale more strongly than normal.
Yoga may not build muscles per se but is the best exercise to tone health and keep onself lively and high spirited. Ihave done most Yogic exercises.Choose a few of them and practise them everyday. If one needs a hassle free body toning and building program Yoga comes handy.
Last but not the least..the joyful way to improve some of the muscle and health parameters is some kind of sport taken to almost every day. Basket Ball..Volleyball..Shuttle..Squash..Table Tennis..lawn tennis etc.

MY ARTICLE ABOUT VASCO DA GAMA
It was in 1997 or so I got an information from Dr. Janardanan of NIT Calicut that a souvenir was being released in Calicut Kozhikode to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the visit of Vasco Da Gama to the shores of Calicut which happened on 20th of May 1498.The souvenir was to be released by the Indo-Portugual Chamber possibly under the aegis of the embassy of Portugual in India.
I wrote an article about VASCO DA GAMA which I found later was the first article in the souvenir. A copy of the souvenir was sent to me by post.Sadly later I lost the copy that was sent to me.In retrospect I believe it to be a very well written piece of matter.
If any one who is reading this has a copy of this article from anywhere around the world kindly get in touch with me.

SOLVING THE TRANSFORMER PROBLEM AT BPL
It was somewhere in 1988 or 1989 ..I was working at the BPL Transformer shop in 80 Koramangala Industrial Estate where coils and transformers were made for Television sets.
There were two key power transformers made at this plant and I being basically an Electrical Engineer found great joy in handling these transformers. One of these transformers stepped down 230 volts to 15 volts..the problem started when Sanyo stopped the supply of these transformers and it had to be made in-house.These transformers were used in the LAN model which was a remote controlled TV.
The original Japanese transformer was very concise and elegant and duplicating it would be an herculean task..we tried to reverse engineer one of those transformers but were not successful which bespeaks of the competence of Japanese manufacturing technology.
However a local design was developed...some 3000 turns of 44 gauge wire on the primary side..and some 300 turns of guage 34 on the secondary side with I think type 17 crngo laminations. I dont precisely remember the design but it was something like this. But the problem was it should withstand 4000 volts which it wasn't.
The problem is that majority of the Engineering personnel at BPL of that time were Electronics people who panicked at this issue but I knew it could be done.
One afternoon I wrapped the transformer tightly with three layers of teraoka tape and the transformer was withstanding 4000 volts. Many batches were made using my prototype and finally we succeeded in orchestrating a full plastic version similar to the Japanese one.
I did something at BPL in retrospect which saved the situation interim.

subash po photo rec nit calicut
This is the old signpost of NIT Calicut when it was REC.We revere this post.It is like a light house. The very first time when we students did not know where REC Calicut was and travelling by local bus from Calicut city constantly searching for our destination and suddenly from out of the blue as the bus takes a turn near the dispensary this sign board pops up from nowhere. It was such a relief.
The present authorities at the campus must be praised for preserving this edifice and giving it the respect which it richly deserves and it is one of the finest pieces of display ever created by anyone anywhere in the world for its conciseness and background.
