D A SURESH MY FRIEND FROM MADRAS CHENNAI

When I used to work in BPL I had a friend called D A SURESH from college of Engineering Guindy and met him for the first time in the CKD TV assembly maintenance section of the Old Madras Road factory.Soon we became friends and for many times caught working late in the plants attending to some break-down.Maintenance in this plant involved looking after Generator  and Compressors and the other plant machinery.

He married Sujata another BPL employee of his time also from Chennai and I had attended the wedding and Dinner  in Banashankari.

Later Suresh got admission into some American University and left BPL.Where ever you are D A Suresh I still remember you.

OSMAN ALI KHAN AND OSMANIA UNIVERSITY

Some time back I had visited  Osmania University in Hyderabad..I think it was in 2009 to attend a two day seminar on Supply Chain Management at the Institute for  Public Enterprise and the event organised by Smt. Jayashree Dubey.

I must place on record the smart staff at the IPE. I had sent a DD for Rs.2000 directly to the institute without mentioning the seminar but fortunately writing my home phone number somewhere on the envelope. All through I was worried if the DD would reach the right hands and was touch with Jayashree Dubey the organizer.  On  receiving the DD the Accounts office made a phone call to my land line number asking the purpose of the DD and i told them to hand it over to Jayashree putting an end to uncertainty and confusion.

Stay at the OU was a pleasant one especially the good food in the messes and good quality lectures and the pleasant climes of the University.Walking through the University in the night was a treat.

One of the best part of my stay here was the view of the Hyderabad city from the Guest House..Hyderabad truly looked like a city of Lights with a million of them burning near and far.

Above is portrait of the founder of Osmania University the last Nizam of Hyderabad  Osman Ali Khan

HANDLING SKIN PIGMENTATIONS

Skin pigmentation's could be a concern for  many persons of various age groups.There could be many cuses and reasons for such pigmentations. The four causes of Skin pigmentations are as follows;

1.Pigmentations which are externally induced
2.Skin pigmentations that are internally induced
3.Skin pigmentations that  are self inflicted by mistake
4.Skin pigmentation's due to genetic reasons.

Let us go through them one by one in some detail;

Externally induced skin pigmentation's are common largely in youth and post-youth stage if one might call it due to dust and other carbon pollutants in the environment through which we live. A five year exposure can lead to such pigmentation's and are NOT permanent in nature. One of the causes of externally induced pigmentation's is sunlight -some components of the u-v radiations of the sun that leave dark spots more precisely on the face. Skin pigmentation's on the face can some times direct or in-direct embarrassing effects. Some times people dont note such things all too soon but only at some advanced stage. It is always good to have a good facial mirror in the house which is rectangular and fairly big enough and the mirror facing a white wall some four feet in distance. This is the ideal setting to see the face every morning which will give ,which will give precise understanding of pigmentation's. Weather conditions also in general create pigmentation's. Stress over a large period of time can also create pigmentation's.

Internally induced skin pigmentation's are those that occur due to causes of food and harmonal reasons. Most of these are short lived and in some cases might need medical treatments. Pimples are internally generated pigmentatins  coming from hormonal reasons. Such situations need management and will exixt for a specific periods of time.

One of the golden rules of handling facial skin pigmentation's is to be patient and not to embark upon some unsteady approach. Many pigmentation's  do diminish with time and need patience in the approach not to make a bad matter worse.

The third form of Skin pigmentation and a dangerous one is self inflicted one. Self inflicted by people who try to damage the effected area using some tools like the nails or some scrubbers and in some cases over application of some wrong medicines which will take decades to disappear.

The fourth form is genetic by nature some of them mostly in non face areas and have not much solutions and must be treated as a blessing.

When ever one sees pigmentation's the most important rule is not to over react to it.It can be handled.Even taunting from friends and relatives must not be treated in panic and  must be taken with utmost patience. The golden rule is not to make some mistake that would need further correction.Learn to first of all live with it sportively and work on it. Visiting the right doctor would be the right step and even ayurveda can provide solutions. But not to wrongly approach and treated  with panic.Watch it, understand it....and then treat it. Self treat it or take professional help. But not to MALTREAT it.

Now that we understand some of the causes of these pigmentation's let us try to see what to do about them.

One of the solutions is to meet the correct kind of doctor preferably a  skin specialist from a large hospital ..research must be done to meet the right and experienced person who first understands the problem....explains the problem to you professionally....explains the medicines prescribed  and the time duration through which results could be obtained..other wise self inflicted skin pigmentation would result for no no fault of yours. The doctor must take adequate time with you to explain the situation .Then follow the treatment according to the time scale and observe results.

Using the right form of facial powder in apt quantities every day also can act as a cure for some pigmentations.

For pigmentation's that are externally induced wash your face with lime water once every day. Pigmentation's on the cheek disappear faster because of the soft nature of the tissue and pigmentation's on the fore head take longer duration to disappear. However lime acts as a cleaning agent. You can also mix curd with it. You can also mix lime and milk.Add a pinch of turmeric to lime and the solution also can be used.Uderstand precisely- curd with lime;milk with lime and also turmeric a small pinch with lime.. Also try squeezing half a lemon fully into the bucket of water from which you take bath..this will act as a cleanser.Even small quantities of turmeric can be added into the water and this combination acts as a cleansing agent.

In non-bath situations  apply curd on the face and leave it for half an hour and then wash it with soap. The same procedure can be used with milk and also use the substance that appears on top of the milk after boiling and follow the same procedure.

Olive oil and Coconut oil are also useful. Apply olive oil on the face and let steam of boiling water on the face for five minutes and then wipe the face and  wash the face with soap.

You can mix lime juice with vaseline also and apply on the face and wash it with water.

What ever be the methodology used study the results closely and discard any procedure that may not be giving advantage.

Internally induced skin pigmentation's generally vanish after a brief period of time. When some one travels over a long distance covering various zones and eating different kinds of foods....pigmentation's can result. Wait for a few days and it might dissapear. How ever stabilise your diet.Drinking lime juice can also help. But stabilise your diet. Consumption of most kitchen vegetables on a regular basis have positive effect on the skin. Please take medical help in such situations and explain clearly to the doctor your activities over the past week or so.

The worst form of  Skin pigmentation are self inflicted largely fro use of excessive medicine. Chemicals form a patch on the skin which could be wrongly diagonized leading to further complications. However in such situations try aromatic hydrocarbons which can help ....maybe vaseline.....When at a petrol pump just take one drop of petrol with your finger and gently rub it on the effected area.Petrol will dissolve the chemicals. When at home wash the face with soap. This petrol procedure must not be done frequently  and only once a fortnight and see the result.

HOWEVER ALL THESE PROCEDURES ARE SUGGESTED FROM EXPERIENCE AND THE AUTHOR IS ABSOLVED OF ANY ENCUMBRANCE WHAT SO EVER FROM WRONG USE OF ANY METHOD.HOWEVER THE AUTHOR CAN BE CONTACTED FOR ASSISTANCE AND OTHER SUPPORT AND HELP BEFORE EMBARKING ON ANY PROCEDURE.

Gen Harris Residence Srirangapattana

Gen Harris   Commander of the Madras Regiment that stormed Srirangapattana  May 1799 and the bungalow above.

Not many would have noticed  a Bungalow on the banks of the Cauvery in Srirangapattana on a  small tract towards the left  ahead on the main road towards Mysore. The  road leading to this Bungalow is a well maintained one thwarted by tourists enjoying the serenity of this place with a resort adjacent to it.

After the fall of Srirangapattana to English hands  Gen. Harris appears to have lived in this place for a brief while and also served as the headquarters of the Garrison that Srirangapattana came to be known as. Garrison is a military centre where arms are made and stored with soldiers to defend the territory, Arms being made by local populace   at Ganjam a village within Srirangapattana under the guidance of people like Col.Scott  whose residence is close by and would be the matter of another description.

Whence and who built this residence is a matter of concern for there is not much written about it anywhere. It is likely it was built by the French (few years before the siege )in European architecture. If this be the case  Gen.Harris would have  pre-occupied this house for a matter of six months or so later to be inhabited by officials of the East India Company who had a say about the Garrison. All was not well with the English Military establishment can be seen in an English Sepoy Mutiny here centered around this Bungalow and the events thereafter leading to the exit of the English East India Company and the Bungalow falling into the hands of the Wodeyar Kings who appear to have let Dewan Purniah occupy this house after retirement  and being deceased in this house.

Srirangapattana appears to have brought tragedy  to any one who occupied it..this appears resplendent and obvious to anyone who studies the course of events. The Vijayanagar kings were dislodged from here ;thereafter the Wodeyars; thereafter the defacto rulers and finally the English. The English for all practical purposes abandoned Srirangapattana preferring Bangalore as a final place of settlement (and Ooty on the other side) even venturing to transfer power and water through nearly one hundred miles from the Cauvery.

I paid a visit to this house now called Inspection Bungalow and has a large hall with two rooms adjoining on either sides  overlooking a servants quarters and a similar feature upstairs.

CALICUTCITY:KUNNAMANGALAM NEAR CALICUT

Some  fifteen kilometers from Calicut Kozhikode is a place called Kunnamangalam..which would translate into a hamlet with hills..in Malayalam.  Karanthur is adjacent to Kunnamangalam towards Calicut (Kozhikode) and Koduvally adjacent to Kunnamangalam towards Wayanad. Kunnamangalam is on the kozhikode-wayanad road.

Kunnamangaslam has a theatre called Sindhu theater which we students used to frequent.IIM Kozhikode is in Kunnamangalam.

There was no full fledged bus-stand in Kunnamangalam prior to 1984 and the first moffusil bus stop came at this place around this time and presently there are two such stands.

As we proceed from Calicut (Kozhikode) towards wayanad the road at Kunnamangalam branches into another that goes towards the right to Chatamangalam where NIT Calicut is located some eight kilometers ahead .At Chatamangalam there is a river which has to be crossed and the location presents an excellent view a combination of water-ways and hills.

One of the shorter routes to Calicut (Kozhikode) from this place is via Karanthur through the Medical College Calicut.

Kunnamangalam must have changed a lot by now and must be in the memories of  NIT Calicut alumni and IIM Kozhikode alumni as well.

MARK CUBBON COMMISSIONER OF BANGALORE AND COORG

Mark Cubbon was the longest serving Commissioner of Bangalore from 1830 to 1861.These dates are in dispute for clinical accuracy, however he served in the post for nearly 31 years assisted actively by Francis Cunningham on whom the Cunningham road in Bangalore is erected. He held the rank of Major General and  more precisely was designated "Commissioner of  Bangalore and Coorg".

The post of Commissioner of Bangalore was a prestigious one and directly reported to the Viceroy and was in charge of the Mysore kingdom and had control as far as Jolarpettai. The railway track from Bangalore to Jolarpettai was laid during his time and from Madras to Jolarpettai by the Madras Presidency.

Not many are aware of a statue of Mark Cubbon erected in 1866 silently presents itself in the city. The statue is on the other side of the High Court building facing the Cubbon Park. This is one of the earliest statues erected in Bangalore which pre-dates the high court building which comes in 1875 and so does the Cubbon Park.

Mark Cubbon had  Administrative discomfort during his later years and was on a collission course with the English Establishment giving up office in 1861 and is dead in Egypt on his way back home. The ICS or the Imperial Civil Service was created and Military officials were being replaced by ICS staff on senior posts.Mark Cubbon is succeeded by L B Bowring who appears to be from the ICS.

SUSHEELA MADAM ECONOMICS TEACHER AT REC CALICUT NIT

Somewhere in 1985 in the fifth Semester at REC Calicut we had a full fledged course on Economics and it was taught by Susheela Madam. I might have forgotten her name I think to the best of my memory it is Madam Susheela was her name. She used to teach Economics in a classical style and I had some initiation into Economics at a very young age.

I think I scored well in Economics at the Exam.Madam I hope I remember your name right, please accept my appreciation for your work and enthusiasm.

I think a basic course in Law also must be introduced in the syllabus.

UNIVERSITY OF STRATHCLYDE SCOTLAND AND MYSELF

In the year 1991  I was offered a seat to study MSc Engineering in Electrical Engineering from the University of  Strathclyde in Scotland.I was banking on a ODA overseas development assistance  Scholarship to fund the Education process but had to drop the admission because the ODA assistance did not come through. This was sad for me.

I still remember my interactions with Prof.Lo who was the Head of the Electrical Department and Catherine Morelli of the Admissions wing.

This is the link between me and The University of Strathclyde in Glasgow Scotland.

SUBURBAN RAIL / RAIL BUS AND BANGALORE CITY

There have been many discussions off and on on creating a Suburban railway network for the city and such discussions were going on for very long time and time has come to put it into some form of action following all the existing rules and regulations and modifying them with respect to modern needs.

The above is a railway map of  Bangalore drawn by me some time back and it gives a fine blue-print of the existing infrastructure.See an inner ring connectivity around Hebbal which is note-worthy and a similar external ring must also be created which means laying of new railway tracks which with modern day technology is a lot easier.

There were many Suburban railway experiments in Bangalore to my observation but remained unsuccessful as they never became popular for the public something that needs to be researched upon but gave authorities the insight and experience to plan better in the future..

Why is a Suburban railway system not successful ? Reason 1; the  large distance between one station to another which commuters feel unacceptable....Reason 2   the need to stand in large queues to get Railway tickets....Reason 3 ..improper access to Railway platforms...Reason 4 ..lack of proper public relations and support at railway Stations for Commuters seeking Information..Reason 5..A general lack of Marketing and apathy..Reason 6..  a perception of the railway system for large journeys as against short ones.

Can we undo this ? Instead of calling Suburban rail as Suburban Rail it should instead be called as Rail Bus with three to four specially designed bogies with Bus numbers which indicate source and destination and intermediate points and operating very frequently.

Every two kilometers Suburban Stations must be set up and the Rail Bus stopping at these Stations..Every bogie must have a Conductor who issues tickets, a proper Security infrastructure within the bogies and a very fast and frequent service. The existing Metro and Bus Stops must be synchronised with these Railway system for last mile connectivity . Rail Buses must be painted differently and uniquely for Commuters to quickly identify them and these Buses must park themselves in the centre of the platform so that quick access can be obtained.

There are many Railway Stations in Bangalore  which do not have proper access facilities to them which must be remedied. Skyways should lead from the external of the Station to a vantage point within the Station. This would create Security issues with unwanted elements getting into the station.Users of rail Bus must be given one time identity cards which must be swiped to gain entry and the person entering the system must be identified even through other Security procedures.

Special coaches must be created for Rail Bus..they must look unique and could be of fiber and other strong plastics and the average speed could be around 50 kmph.

For the Rail Bus to work the concept must be used within a radius of 30 kms from City Central station and any other trains plying beyond these routes should be called Push-Pull or by any other nomenclature.

Synchronisation with Main Railway system would be a major challenge as the existing tracks would be loaded with new trains creating signalling problems and other maintenance issues. Incoming long Distance trains must note that they are passing special zone and take necessary precaitions especially during day time.

Note that the use of the railway system would work cheaper for commuters and reduce wear and tear on Metro and BMTC because of reduced load factor. My brother Sunil who is also an Engineer was an advocate of the Rail Bus much before.

I will give a simple problem of Commuting in Bangalore.Electronic City is an important hub in Bangalore and any one residing in Kengeri and working in Electronic city will have to  use the bus network from Kengeri which would take more than an hour. A Railway link of some kind would make Commuting much easier.

Eventually a Ring Railway network must be created around the city. This would be a difficult task considering land acquisition and other parameters but would provide long term advantages in routing of all kinds of trains.

In 1984 at REC NIT Calicut  used to be Dr.Nirmala Menon doctor at the REC Hospital who used to be friendly with students and at the same time give valid health tips. Students used to some times refer to her as Ammayi  in malayalam meaning Aunt.

REC had a fairly well equipped Hospital near the Co-operative society frequented by students when they were ill.I think Nirmala madam came there in 1984.The hospital had two nurses to assist the Doctor and also few beds .

Thank you Dr.Nirmala where-ever you are ...we students appreciate your concern for us and your general health tips.
