NADAPRABHU KEMPE GOWDA METRO STATION MAJESTIC BENGALURU BANGALORE

EXHIBIT 1...EXTERNAL VIEW OF METRO STATION AT MAJESTIC

EXHIBIT 2  INTERNAL STRUCTURE OF THE METRO STATION

The above two diagrams if read properly for all practical purposes shows the orientation of the NADAPRABHU KEMPEGOWDA METRO STATION. It is at this station that the PURPLE and GREEN lines of the Metro system meet and people interchange from one line to another. The PURPLE LINE GOES FROM BYAPPANAHALLI ON OLD MADRAS ROAD  TO KENGERI ON MYSORE ROAD and the GREEN LINE FROM NAGASANDRA ON TUMKUR ROAD TO YELACHERAHALLI ON KANAKAPURA ROAD.

WHERE IS THIS STATION LOCATED?

The Metro Station is located in one corner of the Majestic Area  towards COTTON PET  side.It has the Railway Station road on one side and Shantala Silk Road on the other and on the other two sides has the KSRTC bus platforms  1  and  2.The Metro terminal makes a womb like stucture at the Cotton Pet Road end engulfing Platform 3 of the KSRTC. It is slightly far from the Indian Railways Train Station but the underground walk-way connects the Indian Railways Train Station to the Metro Station.

HOW MANY ENTRY GATES DOES THE STATION HAVE?

In the Exhibit 1  there are four Entry Gates shown. Entry 1 is on the Railway Station road side. On entering this gate there is a downward going steep escalator that links the top to Platform 2 which is the Metro Station for trains towards Kengeri.

The Entry 2  links the Metro Station to KSRTC bus terminals 1  and  2.

The Entry 3 exits into an underground tunnel that  goes under the Shantala SIlk Road to UPPARPET/BALEPET/TULASI GARDEN also called CHIKKA LALBAGH.

The Entry 4  technically leads to PLATFORM 3 of KSRTC. However the KSRTC terminal 3 can be also reached from Entry 1 gate..

WHERE IS THE TOILET IN THIS STATION ?

One has to enter the PAID area for access to the TOILET. The TOILET is slightly hidden in this Station. The Toilet is close to Entry 4 or the Entry that leads to Terminal 3 of KSRTC. Drinking Water is also avaliable here. If you are in Platform 2 ..go up the Escalator once ..and on the right is another Escalator leading towards Entry 4  and in the side is the Toilet. Do not exit from any of the Card/token exit points for the toilet. Once you are out of the paid zone there is no access to the Toilet.

What is the General Design of this Metro Station?

THIS METRO STATION HAS TWO UNDERGROUND CHAMBERS.THE AISLE IS ON THE TOP WHERE THE ENTRY GATES AND TOILET EXIST. THE FIRST UNDERGROUND HAS THE PURPLE LINE.(BYAPPANAHALLI TO KENGERI AS OF NOW).THERE ARE TWO INDEPENDANT  PLATFORMS FOR THIS LINE. PLATFORM 1 THAT GOES TOWARDS BYAPPANAHALLI.( CUBBON PARK, MG ROAD AND ULSOOR ARE KEY METRO STATIONS ON THIS STRETCH) AND PLATFORM 2 WHICH GOES TOWARDS KENGERI.(KSR RAILWAY STATION,VIJAYANAGAR AND RAJARAJESHWARI NAGAR,JNANABHARATI BANGALORE UNIVERSITY ARE KEY STATIONS  ON THIS STRTETCH).IN THE FIRST UNDERGROUND OF THE PURPLE LINE THERE ARE TWO INDEPENDANT PLATFORMS NAMELY 1  AND 2  ADDING TO CONFUSION OF COMMUTERS.

IN UNDERGROUND 2 ARE PLATFORMS 3 AND 4. THE BASIC ISSUE HERE IS THERE IS ONLY ONE PLATFORM HERE WITH TRAINS USING THE TWO SIDES OF THE PLATFORM.THIS IS CALLED SINGLE PLATFORM DOUBLE RAIL LINE SYSTEM.THIS SYSTEM IS USED BY THE ENTIRE KOLKATA METRO.ONCE YOU ARE IN THIS PLAFROM THERE IS NO CONFUSION AS THE DESTINATIONS ARE CLEARLY MENTIONED ON THE WALL.

How many Escalators are there in this Station?

In Exhibit 2 four Escalators are shown. Escalator 1 and Escalator 2 are within the CIRCLE AREA of the top AISLE. Escalator 1  takes you to Platform 2 going down its two components. This is in Under Ground 1. When you go further it goes to Underground 2 of the Green Line. ESCALATOR 1 IS MARKED L1 IN THE FIGURE.

Escalator 2 shown as L2 in Exhibit 2  takes you down to platform 1 in Under Ground 1  and further down it leads to Underground 2  of Green Line namely platform 3 and 4.

Escalator 3  shown as L3 leads to Entry Gate 4 or E4 THAT LEADS TO ksrtc terminal 3.

Escalator 4 shown as L4 links Entry Gate 1 to Platform 2.

How many Lifts are there in this Station?

There are two lifts in this Station shown  F1  and F2 in the diagram Exhibit 2..The Lifts connect the top Circular Aisle to both the underground platforms.

HOW TO GO FROM PLATFORM 1  TO PLATFORM  2  ?

VERY SIMPLE ..THERE ARE TWO WAYS. GO UP THE ESCALATOR TO THE CIRCULAR AISLE AND DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSITE YOU WILL SEE AN ESCALATOR GOING DOWNWARDS LEADING TO PLATFORM 2  OR YOU CAN ALSO USE THE LIFT AND GO ONE FLOOR DOWN.SIMPLER AND FAST WAY IS TO USE THE ESCALATOR.

THE OTHER WAY IS GO DOWN ON THE ESCALATOR TO PLATFORM 3 AND 4  AND WALK ALONG THE PLATFORM UNTIL YOU REACH THE STAIRS OR ESCALATOR THAT LEADS TO PLATFORM 2.

HOW TO GO FROM PLATFORM 2 TO PLATFORM 1?

JUST REVERSE THE PROCEDURE MENTIONED ABOVE.

MANCHANBELE DAM NEAR BANGALORE

I  paid a short visit to the Manchanbele dam which is on the Arakavathy river technically within Magadi I had earlier written about the Arakavathy river...which definitely has its origins from within the Magadi hills.  The river is a result of rainfall on the vast stretch of Magadi Hills and flows downward towards the the other rivers that join the Cauvery river at Sangam near Kanakapura.

There are many theories about the Manachanbele dam. But  much of it is clear to me. The Arakavathy river on its downward flow forms a natural catchment area of a very large kind storing water thereby and the exit point from this catchment area by and large is a small aperture found on the downward side of the lake. In the event of rain there could be flooding if the water is not stored and hence the engineering idea of damming the outward flow with two  large gates. When it rains it is likely the gates are closed increasing the water level of the reservoir and preventing flooding downstream and the water carefully let out onto the canal while maintaining the level of the reservoir. It is a very essential control system here to prevent flooding thereby serving the twin purpose of maintaining a reservoir and preventing flooding.

Two views of the reservoir and its precincts  are truly endearing. The view of the reservoir itself from the main road with a wonderful array of hills in the background is truly a gift from nature and the other view is the twin gates of the dam down the slope.

Manchanbelle dam is off the mysore road. The two nodal points in one's access to this place is first the dodda alada mara and  chandrappa circle. It could be some twenty kilometers from Mysore road.

BUS SERVICE FROM BANGALORE TO NEW DELHI AND KOLKATA

Some people call me ludicrous for suggesting such a proposition..A bus service from Bangalore to New Delhi and another to Kolkata. There are buses in the World that ply over distances like six thousand five hundred kilometres and the distances involved in the above proposition should be much lesser.

If necessary a National Transport Corporation must be created to oversee such public transport that criss-cross large distances.

The advantages of such a service would be many.It would ease demand on Train and Air services especially for the leisurely traveller, It will be a profitable venture considering the demand on these routes, It will boost Tourism in general and tourist inflow to Splendours and in every sense increase the dynamism and people mobility for various reasons.

DOUBLE DECKER BUSES AND BANGALORE

Many of today in Bangalore would scarcely believe that Double Decker buses once adorned the roads of the city. This is between 1970 and 1980 and they were discontinued and note that during this era there were no ring roads.

They were well designed buses with seating capacity on top with two conductors one at the bottom and the other at top.The Bus conductors and drivers of the erstwhile BTS of this era were less professional in their conduct compared to what they are now.Frequent feuds between BTS (Bangalore Transport Service) staff in the bus and passengers were common. The staff at present are very professional and BMTC(Bangalore Metropolitian Transport Service) is a very well run institution largely due to the refinement brought into its day to day operations and systems and BMTC is truly world class. To my observation as a child during the above era there were mishaps involving these double decker buses due to difficulty in co-ordination between the conductor on the top, the conductor at the floor and the driver. However there was also an incident where a double decker bus capsized creating injuries and these services were discontinued forthwith.

I think couple of such buses could be tried in the city today with one major door with collapsible facility near the driver and a stairway to the top near the driver so that he can monitor at once people on the deck and below ensuring better co-ordination.If London can operate such buses why cant we?

CIRCUS IN BANGALORE

Not many  would appreciate today that the entire  KEMPEGOWDA  BUS TERMINUS in Subash Nagar - Majestic was once an hollow ground and Circus used to take place there for nearly three months every year.Circus....Cinema....and Cricket were the three prominent entertainers of the city all through the 1970.s  and very early 1980.s. BMTC buses used to be parked on the fringes of this hollow ground bearing two digit bus numbers for example 47 was from Majestic to K R Puram and most of the times these buses used to be full and jam packed.

I remember visiting the circus with my Father and brother in 1975 or so and it was a major gala affair that lasted for more than three hours and very entertaining for children. The habit of holding circus in this hollow ground ended somewhere in 1980 after a circus fire that killed nearly hundred people at this location and thereafter Circus at this venue was banned giving way to the BMTC and KSRTC bus stations as we see them and also the Metro station now

Note that this area of Majestic is also called Subash Nagar.

RIMS Ramaiah Institute of Management Studies

Some time back I visited RIMS Ramaiah Institute of Management Studies which is on New Bel Road closer to the BEL factory an institute for Management Studies commenced  a dozen years ago. It was initially started as a small outfit and then came up in the present location.

What I saw basically was a well ordained outfit that truly left me spell bound...adequate number of floors with good class rooms and wi-fi with offices for staff both teaching and non teaching in right measure. I even happened to be at the top of the building where from the view of the city around is breath-taking.

I have always felt that Management Education is different from many other kinds of Education systems largely because the entire subject is open ended in nature which strictly means the combined areas of Management and Business is not always bound by strict domains and absolute truths and facts but is an open science to be examined and understood in a befitting way and the science facing a metamorphosis every now and then. Most social sciences are of this nature and Management education is no exception..which simply means the more regular forms of education of being bound by a syllabus and exam being the be-all and end-all of the Education process is largely limited in the managerial context and the Education environment must indoctrinate the students largely both the tangible and the logical.

I have known Dr. Pattabhiram for many years now who put up RIMS under the overall aegis of the M S RAMAIAH FOUNDATION adheres in full measure to the doctrine that any Faculty must deliver and do absolute justice to the Student in the class and he had zero tolerance to this policy even when he was active at MSRIM.

During my visit to RIMS it was nice to have a rendezvous with my old colleagues and friends like
Mr. Sivadas Nambiar , Dr. Y Rajaram , Mr. Anil Gowda and few others.

May such institutes thrive that give and focus on giving absolute value to the student community.

The Bannerghatta National Park Bangalore

The Bannerughatta National Park as many are well acquainted is tucked in the corner of the Bangalore city largely providing a dedicated green belt of flora and a distinguished spot in its own right merging the modern world with the natural. The terrain of the land in this part of the world is hilly and mountainous being a tributary of the mighty western ghats in some form which jet-sets into the corner of this city. Who and how this place got to be developed to its present pretty shape is unknown but could have been some form of a hunting ground and escapade for people of the past.

Environment is a crucial part of human existence and the Indian Forest Act was passed by the British way back in 1926 shows the effort to protect forest lands by governance. Some of the roads in close proximity to each other to the Bannerughatta road is the Kanakapura Road; the Mysore road and the Hosur road most of these roads running in some form is a close ally of the western ghat mountains and its offshoots.

My earlist experience of having visited this park was in 1990 being attatched  to one of BPL plants of that time at Arakere that falls on the road leading to the National park. On being spurted by a sense of curiosity and adventure one afternoon happenned to embark upon a visit to this park that seemed logical considering it was only a few kilometers from my place of occupation and the visit was memorable for various reasons.

On visiting the various animal enclosures on the right side of the park which was vigorating in many ways was informed about a safari ride about which I had no prior information or inclination . Having paid the requisite fee was boarded into a small bus and with uncertainity of what lay ahead happenned to enter into a region which was truly jungly and forlorn and to ascertain such a place existed in bangalore was difficult at that time to imbibe. Before long and after a journey of about five kilometers or so the vehicle was in the midst of a Tiger Safari which barely meant that the vehicle was face to face with more than a dozen full grown tigers giving an involved and menacing look at we the intruders. That was the fist time I had such close an encounter and acquaintance with this beast and it was to last for more than fifteen minutes with some of them walking very close to the vehicle unhappy with some creatures among them who visit them in regular intervals with an act of infringement. Some of the beasts snarled with some form of disagreement. Thereafter we were led to a lion safari which was in many ways opposite to our earlier experience with the lions nonchantful and serene and largely ignored the vehicle of people who drove by. Tus ended my largely overdue visit to this zoo or park or safari or a wild-life abode what even one may choose to attatch to it.

In the mid 1990's and if not few years earlier the people of Bangalore were driven into melancholy and deep distress by an incident not many would recollect right now. A child being snatched from the hands of its grand-father in an instant act of aggrression by a tiger only to be recovered from the wilderness by the forest officials sans life and what a ghastly event with very little precedence or omen.

The grand-father in an remote act of merriment gesticulated the child in front of the tiger in an act of frolick from within the safari bus and the tiger mistaking it to be its spoilage for the day in an unexpected moment and an act executed at lightning speed whisked the child and bolted into the forest creating bewilderment and chagrin to all in the bus. The whole city stood motion-less for almost many days after the incident with astonishment and awe that such a remote and more than bizzare event should ever occur.

The Bannerughatta National Park of today is quite a serene and more orderly establishment and would take Rs. 250/- to see the zoo and the safari which should be around 05 dollars. The drive through the safari better ordained and maintained. There are three enclosures in the safari each seperate from the other and well cordoned.

The first safari is about herbivores and includes many kinds of deers. This is followed by the bear safari which has about 150 bears in its fold and visitors feel joyous watching many of them play with each other. This is followed by the tiger safari. I am yet to see a considerable number of them at one go but there are a significant many. A white tiger found most of the time in slumber is a quick attraction to any onlooker from the van and note that the route through all these strictures are largely circuitous and winding in their design making it a largely irregular a ride both inviting and interesting. The third section is the Lion safari where quite a few lions can be seen most of the time.

The keepers and curators of this National Park must look for ways and means to even improve and augment the park by adding possibly many other components to the safari like elephant safari and a possible safari with rare birds.
