SUNIL MANOHAR GAVASKAR

Cricket  was a very different kind of a ball-game in the 1970's...unlike what it is  now. Test Cricket was the order of the day and One-day matches for all practical purposes were unheard of. A season of Test Matches were a festival season with kids and adults alike looking forward to it with baited breath. I would classify Cricket into three era's.The era of Radio Cricket  the 1950s to the 1980's...The era of TV cricket from the 1980's to may be 2000...and presently thre present Internet era of Cricket. Radio cricket was basically Test matches...TV Cricket is the one-day version of the game and the present era of 20-20 matches.

In the 1970's the Test team of India comprised of people like Sunil Gavaskar, Chetan Chauhan,Dilip Vengsarkar ,Gundappa Vishwanath,Brijesh Patel,Erapalli Prasanna ,Kapil Dev,Madan Lal, Karsen Ghavri..in my days and people like Ajit Wadekar amd Anushman Gaekwad,Farookh Engineer,B S Chandrasekar in the decade before.

In this era of Radio Cricket thrived Sunil Gavaskar. His contemporaries were Alvin Kallicharan, Andy Roberts,Gordon Greenidge,Lance Gibbs,Clive Lloyd in the West Indies...people like Zaheer Abbas,Muddasar Nazer,Abdul Qadir,Imran Khan in Pakistan,Tony Lewis,Tony Greg,Mike Gatting,Ian Botham,David Gower in the United Kingdom, People like Jeff Thomson,Alan Border, in Australia and Dennis Lilee in NewZealand.I have just named a few I can remember.

Test matches were a very long drawn affair lasting for five days most of the time without a precise result. The all-time great Gary Sobers was from the earlier decade of Sunil Gavaskar and  Gavaskar must have played in at the most one or two series against Sobers.

When we talk of India in World Cricket  Sunil Gavaskar would stand out as a legend of this era and maybe eras to come. GAVASKAR was the finest Test Opener the World has ever seen. Gavaskar was not a great hitter of the ball and may not fully qualify to be in the league of Clive Lioyd or Zaheer Abbas for he never made three centuries in his battle with the game but he brought great poise and discipline as a opener and hit many centuries with classical elegance and technical prudence which the basic tenets of Cricket is all about.Adequate credit has not been given to his mate in most of these ventures in Chetan Chauhan. It appears to me Gavaskar shared a fine rapport with Chetan Chauhan and whenever Gavaskar is spoken about Chetan Chauhan must be remembered too.Chetan Chauhan though he had a long stint with the game never made a century and was once out at 97 against the West Indies making many adherents of the game cry.

I dont know what is the future of Cricket. I definitely  don't see the fanfare that existed in the 1970,s today...will it fade into an Englishman's past-time again...one cant say.People today live in a different environment of Internet and all the paraphernalia that goes with it and the attention span   works in a spurt of small durations over diverse things lacking in the patience to sit in front of some media for long hours to watch one thing in a fixated way.

With the advent of one-day Cricket Gavaskar hanged his boots ,it was simply not his cup of tea but what is memorable is that he was part of the Indian victory of the Prudential Cup in 1983 and the Benson and Hedges trophy in 1984.His experience and expertise must have helped the Indian side achieve these victories.

MANCHANBELE DAM NEAR BANGALORE

I  paid a short visit to the Manchanbele dam which is on the Arakavathy river technically within Magadi I had earlier written about the Arakavathy river...which definitely has its origins from within the Magadi hills.  The river is a result of rainfall on the vast stretch of Magadi Hills and flows downward towards the the other rivers that join the Cauvery river at Sangam near Kanakapura.

There are many theories about the Manachanbele dam. But  much of it is clear to me. The Arakavathy river on its downward flow forms a natural catchment area of a very large kind storing water thereby and the exit point from this catchment area by and large is a small aperture found on the downward side of the lake. In the event of rain there could be flooding if the water is not stored and hence the engineering idea of damming the outward flow with two  large gates. When it rains it is likely the gates are closed increasing the water level of the reservoir and preventing flooding downstream and the water carefully let out onto the canal while maintaining the level of the reservoir. It is a very essential control system here to prevent flooding thereby serving the twin purpose of maintaining a reservoir and preventing flooding.

Two views of the reservoir and its precincts  are truly endearing. The view of the reservoir itself from the main road with a wonderful array of hills in the background is truly a gift from nature and the other view is the twin gates of the dam down the slope.

Manchanbelle dam is off the mysore road. The two nodal points in one's access to this place is first the dodda alada mara and  chandrappa circle. It could be some twenty kilometers from Mysore road.

CALICUTCITY:PLANE CRASH AT KOZHIKODE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00ZJfgugfGs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbgXKSnRAZg

CAPTAIN DEEPAK SATHE

Animated version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UHAWVVfYoc

DATE OF CRASH : 07 AUGUST  2020

TIME : 7 41  PM

FACTS OF THE MATTER

💞   PLANE BREAKS INTO TWO PEICES

💞   TAIL PORTION INTACT BUT SLIGHTLY SEVERED FROM BODY

💞    COCKPIT CHAMBER BREAKS AWAY FROM THE FUSELAGE

💞   ORIENTATION OF THE WRECKAGE IS IN A STRAIGHT FASHION AND NOT SKEWED

💞  COCKPIT CHAMBER BADLY CRASHED DUE TO SOME HEAD ON COLLISION

💞  BOTH THE PILOTS DEAD DUE TO THE ABOVE IMPACT

💞  THE DESCENT  TRACT SEEN ON THE HILL IS SLIGHTLY SKEWED POINTING TO A         INCLINED DESCENT PATH  WITH WINGS ALMOST INTACT.

The above plane crash made sad news. The Air India Express flight had taken off from Dubai at 3:45 IST on a trip to Kozhikode also called Calicut in the state of Kerala in India. The captain of the Plane was Mr.Deepak Sathe an experienced pilot and a former fighter jet pilot of the Indian Airforce. Karipur as the airport is called is more than 30 years old and had a very fine safety record until this incident which has left many aghast. Eighteen people lost their lives and many were injured but could have been a more serious accident had it not been for the expertise it appears to me of Mr.Deepak Shinde.

The weather was inclement with incessant rains and higher tail winds on the run-way it appears to me. There are many versions to this incident and I have pieced together various versions and came to the most plausible one.

The pilot had almost landed the plane on the first instance but due to winds noted that the plane had not aligned itself on the run-way it appears to me and took-off the nearly landed plane which only a very experienced pilot like him could have done, this has seen him travel towards the Western Ghats into kozhikode city. What happened thereafter is unclear. His inability to land the plane was possibly due to winds at that time dis-orienting the plane. He has reverted back into the open air of the sea which is more safe from any un-expected tall or hilly structures and this time tried to land the plane from the other side of the run-way so that the obtrusive effects of the wind could be mitigated. He has come out of kozhikode city into the seas it appears to me and re-attempted landing from the  reverse side.

This time the alignment of the aircraft was correct  but if survivor  accounts are to be believed touched down on the run-way a little too inside or slightly too inside from the start of the run-way leading to insufficient run way for the plane to fully stall. At relatively high speed he has tried to brake in panic creating a skid  (of some twenty degree towards the right) and the plane going out of control. It appears to me had there been a fifty metre more leeway this accident could have been avoided.

The plane has descended down the runway plateau some thirty feet the descent appears to be relatively furious with the nose hitting the ground and the cock-pit chamber dis-integrating itself from the fuselage and the cockpit chamber in a free flow collides with the wall of the airport creating a crater and the collision so concentrated takes the lives of the pilot and the co-pilot. Had the cock-pit chamber not dis-integrated and collided with the wall the pilots would have survived with injuries. Through the crater left by the collision the public have poured around the Aircraft and offering help. Eighteen people lost their lives most of them possibly sitting in the front seats and the people in the rear bore the brunt of a violent shake-up leading to fractures and injuries.

It is sad such an event has happened. Ten years back a similar incident occurred in Mangalore killing most on board as the plane caught fire. Both these airports are table-top and the incident has happened during night when visibility is poor.

My observation is that the International Airport at Cannanore(Kannur) must be used to land any air-plane coming from the Gulf which has some complexity in landing procedures istead of resorting to audacious procedures putting lives in peril. Planes to Mangalore or Kozhikode facing any form of  landing difficulty must be routed to Cannanore airport for a brief stall and let to proceed to their destinations only after the conditions are brighter and the last thing anyone likes to see is  a large plane tossed down the hill like a toy creating disastrous results.

AN ACCIDENT AT LOWRY MEMORIAL SCHOOL

There was an incident at Lowry Memorial school that could have gone awry that I realised the other day. In the afternoon lunch break there used to be some time to play  Cricket. It so happened one afternoon I was standing behind the wicket-keeper in front of one of the buildings and it appears to me that he deliberately let a ball pass through his hands and the ball suddenly hitting me below my left eye. Had it been few inches above it would have hit my eye. I was aghast and upset at school and on reaching home in the evening tried to hide the incident but my mother instantly noted the dent below my eye and my father arriving in the evening got upset and took me to hospital and was given an injection. I must have been in the fifth standard or so.

When I look back at this incident I sometimes shudder thanking heavens the speeding cricket ball did not damage my eye.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS LECTURE VIDEO

S F ANGRE and myself at BPL

At BPL I had professional association with an elderly and experienced person by name S F ANGRE. Angre used to work in Colour Television planning department and was a person of Marati origins and used to speak the Marati language well. My first association with Mr.Angre was at the OMR old madras road factory ..on retirement he was re-accommodated at the 80 koramangala transformer shop where we got to know each other even better. He was basically a knowledgeable person.

There was a Supply Chain problem at this place with regards to a lamination used for  a VCR power transformer which was suddenly in short supply. I dont remember the exact type now but must have been type 30 crngo. One Mr.Kamath was a principal supplier of this lamination(and another jyothi industries in Banashankari II stage) but could not keep up the demand which saw me and Mr. Angre in a sourcing difficulty. We set out one morning and visited few suppliers in Rajajinagar Industrial area but most of them could not give a strong assurance of making supplies. the supply of this lamination is dependent on the  electric motor industry ...after the stamping s for the electric motor is cut from the metal sheets the motor companies sell the remnant as scrap and from the corners of the sheet e and i type laminations are stamped by  transformer lamination suppliers. KIRLOSKAR ELECTRIC  and GKW were suppliers if this scrap.  Mr.Angre knew Mr.Ambekar Senior Vice President at Kirloskar and our next task was to meet him and we were inside the Kirloskar plant in Malleswaram. I think Sudindra and Mr.Parthasarathy were the purchase managers at Kirloskar but some how we were in dilemma as they were not of much help to solve our problem.

Almost that afternoon after lunch I was having a stroll in the Koramangala Industrial Area and suddenly saw a company Babji Enterprises who was in the Electrical Lamination business. In Koramangala industrial area itself there was a supplier which we were unaware of. I spoke to Mr.Babji and he said ...any amount of tonnage..i can sevice you...I still remember his confidence.I spoke to Mr. Muddapur plant in-charge of BPL at Bommanahalli and he asked me to take a sample.By evening a sample was given by Babji Enterprises which was tested on a transformer and the no-load-current was exactly what it should be and the price also was less and we took lot of supplies from him thereafter.

This is in 1990 and there were no mobile phones or internet and that I was able to find a supplier on a casual walk through the koramangala industrial area that too who could give a finer quality at a much better price left me and many wonder-struck.

THE ESSENCE OF THE STUDY OF ECONOMICS

The study of  Economics is a very crucial one and is a professional and technical subject that encompasses a wide variety of domains. My earliest association with this subject was at the Engineering College where we had a full subject on Classical Economics theory.Much of the study of Economics begin with Adam Smith and his "Wealth of Nations" ,which was the earliest attempt at making Economics a full fledged subject matter of concern.

Concept of Economics encompass every -day life and even the running of Governments. But most of the study is largely cluttered by diagrams and graphs.I was listening to a lecture at MIT(Masachussets Institute of Technology) where the speaker called Economics a "dismal science" because the study of Economics is largely associated with scarcity. But is Economics a study of Scarcity ? Not at all. A proper study of Economics and its applications at all levels helps in the creation of abundance and helps societies understand Economic situations.

The good or bad of the study of Economics is the various strategic levels from which matters can be assessed. There is a high altitude level called Macro Economics and a more magnified view at a personal level called Micro Economics and note that the domains are highly interconnected.

For me Economics is just three words .Supply,Demand and Price ..add to that two more riders Utility and Difficulty. Utility and Difficulty pertain to Micro-Economics while Supply and Demand pertain to Macro Economics and Price is a common factor between these two domains. Price is determined by purchasing power on the Micro-economic side  and cost of manufacturing on the Macro-Economic side.

The concepts of  Micro-Economics is rampant in a Jungle.I call this domain Jungle Economics. In the absence of a well ordained Economic System Jungle Economics prevail. What is Jungle Economics? It is the most primitive form of Economics..where there is zero welfare from any organised body.Every time a Tiger is hungry it has high utility for food that might be difficult to find. When it is young it has the prowess to run behind a deer or an ox..as it runs it is loosing energy making it even desperate for food..if it gets the kill..well and good..for a few days and the cycle restarts again. As it gets older it stops running behind the prey and uses strategy by waiting near a water hole where its prey are constrained to visit and attacks in a spurt...it may attack other carnivores or slip into a nearby village and become a cattle-eater or a man-eater.All that the tiger is doing is Economics..and human beings would behave in the same way if an organised Economic system never existed. In other words the jungle is a "Zero Welfare Economic System" and forms a kind of basis for all forms of Economic Study.Simply said it is a high Utility Environment with High Difficulty atleast for the Carnivores and even some classes of herds.

Let us study the Human Domain.Beating Inflation is the collective activity of Human Economics. The opposite of Jungle Economics is Human Economics. We Humans by nature eat various forms of food and could be called a Herbo-Carnivore.But there are many other demands like Clothing and the like.Much of Human Economics at a Micro-level depends on how one runs oneself. However beating Inflation is the most important challenge of an Economic System in the human domain.Matching Supply and Demand on one side and maintaining a steady price and taxing people with in-ordinate incomes to keep Purchasing Capacity at parity. All these are corner stones of a Human Economic System which prevents the Human Economics going the jungle way.Taxation sometimes help in Collective balance of the Economy preventing Inflation. All Economies Inflate with time but it has to be controlled and processed .Inflation is a scenario of Increasing Prices ..where Demand and Supply are not properly matched or Demand far exceeds the Supply.

Let us understand this a bit deeper. Increase in Population increases Demand.Increasing Demand creates Alternate Demand or the Demand for Substitutes.Government has to constantly tap up Supply.Increasing Supply means increasing production.Increasing Production means scarcity of land because Land is needed for Production,Increasing Production means need for investment and labour that is trained,Investment means inputs from the Banking System, a largely working labour force increases Consumption and putting an elongation on Demand (reason why inflation control is difficult) and add to that the need to Import to meet the Demand..all steps to keep Inflation under check.Organised Economic Systems around the World are in constant effort to match Supply to Demand and an ideal Economic system around the World would be an Import-Export regime with minimum tariffs and duties.

What is the essence of the study of Economics. Primarily to prevent Human Economics  falling into the Jungle Economics trap. How can this be done? May be in three ways.Firstly Government must harness all possibilities to induce large-scale welfare in to an Economic System..Secondly the World Community must be more forthcoming in International trade with reduced barriers...and finally improving the Education process , its expanse and deliverables to equip people with skills and knowledge and if World communities focus on the third thing ,with time the first and second will fall in place.

THE BACK-HOLDER

HIDING IN SOME HOSTEL ROOM WITH PAIN,
FACING HUMILIATION AND STRAIN,
WONDERING WHERE HE LOST TRACK,
HE HAS SOME PAPERS THAT ARE BACK.

UNCLES' DESCEND FROM HOME,

ALL THAT OUR WARD DID HERE IS ROAM,
HE HAS SIXTEEN PAPERS TO CLEAR,
FELLOW SHOWS NO SIGN OF FEAR.

HIS FATHER HAS DEVELOPED PRESSURE,

MOTHER HAS INCREASED SUGAR,
ONLY HIS SISTER SUPPORTS HIM,
SAYING HE ALWAYS "FROTHS AT THE BRIM".

THE STEWARD DOES NOT WANT THEM AROUND,

THE WARDEN PROWLS AT THEM LIKE A HOUND,
RESIGNED TO A SORRY FATE,
REPULSION AT EVERY GATE.

IT COULD BE THE SYSTEM'S FAULT,

THAT THEY ARE IN A HALT,
OR ,THEY COULD HAVE BEEN SMITTEN,
IN THIS TENDER AGE OF FUN.

ALL OF THEM MAKE A GANG,

WE HAVE TO ACT AND BANG,
THEY UNDERTAKE SOME JOINT STUDY,
WITH RENEWED STRATEGY.

THEY ALL FILL THE FORM,

FOR THE IMPENDING EXAM,
EXUDING RARE GRACE AND FAITH,
THOUGH THEY ARE LATE.

IN THE EXAM HALL THEY WINK AT EACH OTHER,

WHAT WE ALL STUDIED IS HERE,
BEING CAREFUL AT EVERY STEP,
IT MIGHT BE THE LAST CHANCE TO PEP.

IN THE END HUG EACH-OTHER TO DEPART,

ALL OF THEM WITH A HEAVY HEART,
THEY ALL FACED A RARE PLIGHT,
AND  INVOLVED IN A PRICELESS FIGHT.

JUNIORS CALL THEIR HOME TO TELL,

THEY ARE OUT OF HELL,
THEY HAVE CLEARED THEM ALL,
THOUGH THE CHALLENGE LOOKED TALL.

BACK IS NOT A BAD WORD,.

MANY A DISTINGUISHED ARE HIDDEN IN THIS HERD,
LATE IN LIFE THEY MIGHT BLOOM,
NOW ,THOUGH THEY ARE IN A DOOM,
SUPPORT THEM  HANDLE THE BACK-LOG,
NEVER TREAT THEM AS A HOG,
THEY ARE SOMEBODY'S CHILDREN TOO,
ONE DAY CAME HERE FROM  'OUT OF THE BLUE',
GIVE THEM A LEGITIMATE PLACE TO STAY,
WHEN THEY ARE IN THIS FRAY,
NEVER TREAT THEM AS A PREY,
OVER SOME QUIRK OF FATE,
THEY ENTERED THE NIT(REC) GATE,
FOR THOUGH THEY NOW SWIM AGAINST THE TIDE,
COULD SOME DAY BECOME SOCIETY'S PRIDE.

Dr.M V Kesava Rao..FIRST DIRECTOR OF REC NIT CALICUT

There is an interesting anecdote in my life.I was travelling in 1998 from Bangalore to Chennai by a JTC corporation bus and happened to pick up a conversation with an elderly person sitting next to me who happenned to be the nephew of Dr.Keshava Rao the first principal of REC NIT Calicut from 1961 to 1969.He spoke to me at length about Mr.Rao and his trials as Principal at REC Calicut and political interference made him step down. Dr.Rao was earlier Principal of College of Engineering Trivandrum from 1950 to 61 and after his tenure as Principal of REC NIT Calicut  was at NIE Mysore.

The thought that a Mysorean was involved in laying and nurturing the foundations of  REC NIT Calicut makes a person like me feel proud.

S L KIRLOSKAR

Shantanu Lakshman Rao Kirloskar

Few months back I was at the library of National Law School of India University and among the law books chanced to see a book personally written by S L Kirloskar. It made very interesting reading and I spent considerable time reading it.Sadly I  dont remember the exact name of the book but he has very lucidly and in very simple style elaborated his life in the early part of the 20th century and the early large scale manufacture of cycles by his father LAKSHMAN RAO KASHINATH KIRLOSKAR and later Pumps. He even explains the incidence of Plague to which his mother fell victim and their relocation to Belgaum if Iam not mistaken at length.Such books give deep insight into the era through which mankind progressed in general.

ACE CARBO -NITRIDERS BANGALORE-58

RAHUL MASUREKAR
MANAGING PARTNER

RAHUL A MASUREKAR  Managing  Partner of  ACE CARBO-NITRIDERS in Peenya Industrial Area  Bangalore...An Engineering Graduate from BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCES ....who put up ACE CARBO-NITRIDERS in 1974.

I  have written about Peenya Industrial Area earlier and many people from around the world must have had a look at it for the large conglomerate of  small scale sectors it has and has served as the back-bone of the economy of the city and the country for several decades now.The estate is a miracle in itself and I was personally associated with the minute aspects of the estate for many years.

In one such association I had the good fortune of  meeting and interacting with Rahul Masrekar who runs ACE CARBO-NITRIDERS which is in the heat treatment industry.I recently met up with him and was nice to see his enterprise having a much better strategic posture than the one I saw twenty years ago.The office staff were courteous to me and conducted me to his office.I even had a look at the plant working for few minutes and found a disciplined outfit.

Heat Treatment is an important component of any economy..by heat treatment the properties of materials change for the better and make it more valuable and the Economy in general need the large-scale support of such outfits.I  have seen heat treatment using gases and special electrical power equipment..some times high-power current devices that drive large current at very low voltages into charges. It is largely a metallurgical process and phenomena and is a speciality in itself. I must congratulate Rahul for having stuck to this field and progress in its various challenges. He services many formidable organisations in the country.

I have pasted some excerpts from his web site which organizations would find it interesting.

ACE CARBO NITRIDERS is a pioneer in the Heat Treatment of steel parts. It is located in Bangalore, at the Peenya Industrial Estate, the largest industrial estate in South-East Asia. The total capital employed is 20 Million Rupees with a current plant capacity of 400 tonnes / month.

ACE CARBO NITRIDERS undertakes –
      1.    Heat Treatment Job Work
     2.    Metallurgical and Failure Analysis of Steel Components
    3.  Consultancy on Heat Treatment process and Plant setup
