The BAIKAMPADY INDUSTRIAL AREA ( BIA ) is a reasonably large industrial area in the city of Mangalore some ten kilometres from the city on the Udupi highway.
This Industrial area primarily owes its origin to the Mangalore port near-by which had many ships arriving to the port since time immemorial. Ships have various professional requirements largely involving metal forming industry through the melting of metal and poring it into moulds to make heavy equipment's like anchors and pulleys. Since Iron is available in plenty in mines nearby...read the Kudremukh Iron Ore company.. such complex metal forming companies took shape in the Baikampady Industrial area. It was cheaper to source such products from the Mangalore port for Shipping Institutions.
With the growth of agriculture in this belt came MCF Mangalore Chemical and Fertilizers which once used to be a large complex adjacent to this Industrial area making fertilizers like Urea and many constituent Industries in the BIA catered to the Agri industry in various forms ..Even today Cashew processing industries form a key part of BIA. Industrial gases of various kinds are also manufactured here for medical and industrial use.
The skill at Metal processing which was originally the activity of BIA automobile Spring manufacturers cropped up here making suspension springs for Trucks and similar vehicles. BIA is today a key Industrial area which has the potential to house companies that work in other areas like Information Technology.
