In 1982 when we were students at the Calicut Regional Engineering College seven of us used to stay at room B 315...and out of the blue four of us decided to make a sudden departure to our home town for a day or two.All of us were new to Calicut and the routes and roadways. It was an impromptu decision endorsed by all and S V Giri and Myself from Bangalore set to leave for Bangalore the plan being to take the 9PM bus. That evening if my memory serves me right we got to see the movie RAJPUT at Pushpa talkies near Palayam junction.
On arriving at the Bus stand we were informed that the bus was fully reserved and there were no seats.I tried to implore the Conductor to let us in and still remember the blunt way in which he shut the door.
We were informed that the next bus was at 2:30 AM that too the Trishur -Bangalore service that would come to the Calicut bus stand.Imagine the wait at night when all were asleep two adventurous lads waiting almost all night sometimes apprehensive if the bus would really show up.This is a Karnataka state RTC super delux bus.
I had positioned myself to charge into the bus once it appeared as there was some considerable crowd possibly waiting for this bus. And lo at around 2:45 AM the bus charges into the Calicut bus stand and I being better positioned and angled dashed at the bus and made way for myself with some strain noting the seats 23 and 24 in the rear vacant stumbled into one of them and reserved the other for my room mate.
It was a pleasant journey I must say both of us dozing and waking up at Gundlupet and reaching Bangalore at 10:30 in the morning..the bus being driven by a very experienced driver.
Sometimes when I look back I ask myself could we have progressed differently ?May be we should have proceeded to Manatavady for which there were buses aplenty and then come to Virajpet and finally to Bangalore. At that age we were apprehensive we would get lost.
I had to wait at Singapore International Airport for almost a night sitting on the couch at the airport reminiscenced the experience at Calicut Bus stand many years ago.
