ANANTANARAYANAN MY SENIOR AT SATHYA SAI COLLEGE

Anantanarayanan used to be my senior both at Lowry Memorial High School and at Sathya Sai College in Whitefeild. He joined Sathya Sai College along with Stanley another senior of mine at Lowry School.Sathya Sai College had a penchant for students from Lowry Memorial School  due to similarity in operational culture and had affiliation to the American ethos and way of life.Sathya Sai College at Whitefield had few American professors on its rolls like  Dr. ALLWYN DRUCKER.

Anantha as we used to call him was a moderate success at Lowry Memorial School but was a big success in the Commerce stream which he took up later being a rank holder all-through his five year stint at Sathya Sai College. In the BCom exams of Bangalore University to my memory three students would always figure in the rank list, Anantha Narayanan, Kiran Vaid and Deepak Melwani.

He used to be our inspiration though we studied the science stream. His sister also was a student at Lowry Memorial School. In Lowry Memorial School Anantha had a class mate B R Suresh and another person whose name I dont recollect.B R Suresh I cannot forget because they used to call him B R Dumma because he was a very fat person. AnanthaNarayanan would play table tennis also well.

On being inspired by people like Ananthanarayanan even I got 52 rank at the Pre-University Board in Karnataka state in 1982.I should have got a better rank because I got only 83 in Chemistry which I think even today should have been atleast 90. Had I got 90 I would have got seat at KREC Suratkal in the first list itself which I didnt.

I VISIT LOWRY MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL

Few weeks back I visited the Lowry Memorial High School though not out of previous design but out of spite and what I saw wonder-struck me..a totally different entity from what it used to be some five years ago.The ring roads and now the Metro has changed the posture of the school..much earlier the gate of the school faced the KR Puram railway station but shifted towards the road that leads to Kaggadasapura. Now a large chunk of land being taken for the KR Puram metro station and the metro pillars.

The security staff at the school stopped me and I had to introduce myself and was let in.A well made Tar road resembling a National Highway connects this entry point through and through to the the other gate at Marathalli Ring road. The road passes right infront of the VTC, the Chapel and straight yonder and many buildings have come up on either side and the erstwhile farm is totally obliterated. A canteen has come up down this road from where I had some soft drinks and a dedicated sports complex has come nearby.

I felt bad that the old pristine and rustic campus has given way to a very formal  outfit.

I had a stroll back on the same way and paused in front of the Principals house where even today I can hear the voice of my Mother. As a four year old Mrs. Easterbrook the wife of the then Principal had taken me to this house from the play-ground where I was playing.I was sitting on the dining table and having some food she offered me.My mother came into the campus with lunch for me but was strained to find out I was no where in the school..and some bystander told my mother that Iam in the Principal's house. She came running for me and almost yelled my name from the outside and I came running out of this house thanking Mrs. Eaterbrook. The panic call of my mother is even today vivid in my ears.

Times change and so do people and campuses..and the person who designed the present campus deserves praise for this meticulous outfit.

GENTRY LOWRY FOUNDER OF LOWRY MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL BANGALORE -16

IN  1942

IN  1909

Lowry Memorial College and Group of Institutions is part of the worldwide network of Educational Institutions operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church Organization.  The Organization runs more than 300 Schools and Colleges in India and around 10,000 schools and 150 Colleges and Universities all over the world.

The Organization also runs Hospitals, Old Age Homes, Orphanages and other Welfare centers around the globe and has been serving the society irrespective of caste, creed and religion.

Lowry Memorial College and Group of Institutions began as South India Training School at Coimbatore in the year 1915.  It was then established by Elder G.G. Lowry and his wife Bertha Lowry who were Missionaries from U.S.A. The School was moved to the present location of 50 acres of land in the year 1917. The Institution grew and became one of the premier Institutions in Southeast Asia.  During the course of time the South India Training School was renamed as Spicer Missionary College. In the year 1942, during World War II, the campus was taken over by the British Government for their military needs. The school was then relocated to Kollegal and Chennapatna where it remained until 1946. The college was relocated to Spicer Memorial College in Pune, which is now known as Spicer Adventist University. In the year 1946, the British Government handed over the property back to the School Management. The School was moved for the last time to its present location and it was renamed as Lowry Memorial High School in honor of the founder late Elder G.G. Lowry.
In the years that followed, the Institution underwent a gradual metamorphosis to become one of the premier Christian Institutions in Bangalore. Great personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Sir. M. Visvesvaraya, Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar, Prof. Udupi Ramachandra Rao and many more have visited this Institution and commended it for its philanthropic and social service.

IF ANY OF THE DESCENDANTS OF Mr.GENTRY LOWRY WERE TO READ THIS..PLEASE CONTACT ME.I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THEM BETTER.
